Crime Prevention Strategies for Business Owners

Category:
Date:

17 May

As a business owner, ensuring the safety and security of your property is crucial to maintaining a thriving operation. The Wood Buffalo RCMP offers valuable tips to help reduce crime and keep your business secure. Implementing these strategies can safeguard your assets and provide peace of mind. Here’s how you can enhance your business security:

1. Secure Entrances

  • Lighting: All entrances should be well-lit. Consider using motion detector lights to illuminate areas around your business. Adequate lighting deters potential criminals and increases visibility.
  • Deadbolts: Install high-quality deadbolts on all exterior doors. Opt for deadbolts with a 1-inch throw, which extends into the door frame, providing a stronger lock.

2. Reinforce Doors and Windows

  • Anti-Pry Plates: Install anti-pry metal plates on exterior doors. These plates are bolted to the door and cover the gap between the door and the door frame, making it more difficult to force entry.
  • Glass Reinforcement: Apply security film, quick-release window bars, or roll-down shutters to glass doors or windows near locks. This additional layer of protection reinforces the glass and prevents easy break-ins.

3. Utilize and Maintain Alarms

  • Alarm Systems: Use an alarm system in conjunction with other security measures. Ensure that the system is active and operational at all times.
  • Motion Sensors: Check motion sensors to ensure they cover the widest area possible, including all entry and exit points. Regularly test and maintain these sensors to ensure they are functioning correctly.
  • Flashing Strobe Lights: If possible, install a flashing strobe light outside your business that activates with the alarm. This visual alert can deter criminals and draw attention to a break-in in progress.

4. CCTV and Key Management

  • CCTV: Ensure that your CCTV system is in good working order and that it records the correct date and time. Regularly review footage and maintain equipment to ensure it captures clear images.
  • Key Management: Keep a record of all keys issued and have them engraved with “Do Not Copy” to prevent unauthorized duplication.

5. Maintain the Exterior

  • Landscaping: Trim landscaping away from doors and windows to provide clear sight lines into your business. Overgrown vegetation can provide cover for intruders.
  • Secure Tools and Ladders: Use high-quality padlocks and chains to secure any ladders or tools that could be used in a break-in.
  • Address Visibility: Display your address clearly on both the front and rear of your building to ensure quick identification by emergency services.
  • Maintenance: Keep the building landscape, sidewalks, and parking areas clean and well-maintained. A well-kept exterior can deter criminal activity and improve the overall safety of your property.

By following these tips, you can significantly enhance the security of your business and contribute to a safer community. Remember, prevention is key to reducing the risk of crime and ensuring that your business remains secure. Stay vigilant and proactive in your security measures to protect your valuable assets.
